The legend of El Dorado and the Seven Cities of Gold story came together in Mexico and the southwestern United States. These legends promised gold, but once again, it was a dream that never really came true. Instead, the legend led to big parts of North America being mapped. This also meant that much of the continent was ruled by the Spanish. The Southwest still has signs of Spanish ownership. Cities like El Paso, Santa Fe, San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have Spanish names. Hundreds of years later, the southwestern states and California became part of the United States. This area brought many Spanish foods, clothing, and holiday celebrations to the country.

During this same time period, English explorers were sailing the oceans, too. They also wanted gold and glory. The story of El Dorado first belonged to the natives of South America. Then it became a Spanish story. And the legend kept spreading. It wasn’t long before El Dorado was talked about by the English. Now it was their turn to search for the world’s biggest treasure.
